While the lifestyle of super yacht crew may seem glamorous, it comes with its unique set of challenges. One often overlooked aspect of working on a super yacht is the constant exposure to the sun’s harmful rays.

In this blog post, we will explore the reasons why super yacht crew need to prioritise sun protection and the essential measures they should take to safeguard their skin.

 • Extended Exposure to UV Radiation:

One of the primary reasons super yacht crew must prioritise sun protection is the prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Spending long hours on the open sea exposes crew members to intense sunlight, increasing the risk of skin damage and potential health issues.

• Higher Altitude Amplifies UV Intensity:

Super yachts often sail in regions with clear skies and abundant sunlight. The combination of being at sea level and the higher altitude of the yacht amplifies the intensity of UV radiation.

• Reflective Surfaces:

The surfaces on a yacht, including the water, deck, and white surfaces, can reflect UV rays, intensifying their impact on exposed skin.

This reflection can lead to a higher risk of sunburn and skin damage.

• Skin Health and Longevity:

Beyond the immediate concerns of sunburn and discomfort, prioritising sun protection contributes to long-term skin health.

Chronic exposure to UV radiation without protection can (and will) accelerate the aging process.
By adopting sun-safe habits, super yacht crew can maintain healthier and more youthful skin in the long run.

This not only enhances the overall well-being of yacht crew members but also supports a professional and polished appearance.

• Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer:

Super yacht crew face an increased risk of developing skin cancer if they do not take adequate sun protection measures.

Regular use of sunscreen, protective clothing, and seeking shade can significantly reduce this risk.

  • Setting a Positive Example:

By prioritising sun protection, crew members not only safeguard guest’s health, but also set a positive example for guests, encouraging responsible behaviour in the sun.

WHAT CAN SUPER YACHT CREW DO TO PROTECT THEIR SKIN:

• Sunscreen Essentials

Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating, preferably SPF 30 or higher. Make sure it provides protection against both UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (Ultraviolet B), which has a shorter wavelength) rays.

Reapply frequently, especially if swimming or sweating.

Always make sure that the deck crew have sunscreen available, especially in the beach club.

I know most deck crew will absolutely ignore you when you talk to them about the importance of applying sunscreen regularly, but still, keep reminding them!

You will find that they will end up doing it just so they don’t have to listen to you saying the same thing to them over and over again 😊

• Uniforms with UV Protection

Investing in uniforms with built-in UV protection is a smart move for yacht crew members spending long hours under the sun. Hopefully your budget will allow this, and if it doesn’t, try to talk to the Captain about it.

Lightweight, breathable fabrics with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) technology.

Some companies that stock uniform with UV protection, and that I tried and tested myself:

  • Protective Clothing and Accessories

In addition to specialised uniforms, yacht crew members should consider wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight long-sleeved shirts for added protection.

Sunglasses with UV protection help protect the delicate skin around the eyes and reduce glare from the water.

These will also make great presents for guests!

• Seek Shade During Breaks

Designate shaded areas on the yacht where crew members can take short breaks, eat lunch, or reapply sunscreen without direct exposure to the sun.

Prioritise shade during peak sunlight hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Stay Hydrated

Hydrated skin is less prone to sun damage, so encourage crew members to drink plenty of water, especially in the warm Mediterranean climate.

• Regular Skin Checks

Encourage your crew members to perform regular self-examinations of their skin to detect any changes or abnormalities early on.

Early detection of skin issues can be crucial in preventing long-term damage or addressing potential health concerns.

As someone with a large amount of moles in my skin, I made sure that I visited a dermatologist once a year. Whatever country I was at, and however busy I may have been.

Remember: there is absolutely nothing more important than your health.

WHAT TO AVOID:

• Low Sun Protection Factor (SPF):

One of the primary considerations when selecting sunscreen is the Sun Protection Factor (SPF).

A common mistake is opting for a sunscreen with too low an SPF.

While SPF 15 may provide some protection, dermatologists recommend using at least SPF 30 for daily use and SPF 50 or higher for extended sun exposure.

Nowadays, there is a wide range of make up with sun protection in the market.

As we all know you will be very busy, and probably forget to top your sunscreen up throughout the day, at least opt for make up with sun protection incorporated.

I used to opt for bio and organic good quality foundations, with 50SPF.

The Ninth Avenue Forever Bloom foundation, although a bit pricey, used to work wonders for me during busy charter seasons.

It does not contain parabens or artificial fragrances, which is always a plus for me.

• Inadequate Broad-Spectrum Coverage:

Not all sunscreens offer broad-spectrum protection, which shields against both UVA and UVB rays.

To ensure comprehensive coverage, choose a sunscreen labelled as “broad-spectrum.”

• Chemical Sunscreen Ingredients:

Some individuals may be sensitive to certain chemical sunscreen ingredients, such as:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octocrylene
  • And avobenzone

Consider opting for mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as alternative ingredients.

Also, avobenzone is the evil ingredient that will stain all your beautiful guest’s linen and towels, stay away from it!

    • Expired Sunscreen:

Just like any skincare product, sunscreen has a shelf life.

Expired sunscreen may lose its effectiveness and fail to provide adequate protection.

Always check the expiration date before considering keeping the sunscreen stock you have onboard for next season.

    • Water-Resistant Claims without Verification:

Water-resistant sunscreens are beneficial for activities involving water, but not all products live up to their claims.

Look for sunscreens that are independently tested and verified for water resistance, especially if you plan to swim or engage in water sports.

Sun protection brands that have worked for me:

    • Coola

Eco-friendly brand, which products are made with high-quality organic ingredients.
    My top pick from Coola:

    • Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 – Fragrance Free. I personally always prefer a fragrance-free product; however, this product comes in an array of smells, which I have tried and they smell divine, yet still organic and safe!

    • Classic Face Mist SPF 50: this is a pantry must have for me! I used to apply this every couple of hours, and not only helped me to stay protected from the sun, it also helps your make up to look great for longer. Your guests will also adore this product!

    • Mineral Face Matte Tint Unscented SPF 30: a “tinted moisturiser” type of product, but with SPF30. Another one of my must have onboard for when I didn’t have time to put make up on

    • After Sun Moisturising Lotion: and, of course, the after sun.

    • Sun Bum

I am sure you are also familiar with Sun Bum products, so I will not go into too much detail.

I used them for years and do rate them, however, Coola products have worked better for me. (Plus, they look cutter in the display baskets, in my opinion 😉)

Although I am certainly not an expert in sunscreen, I do believe we should all inform ourselves on the “basics”, not only for our own safety, but also so you can provide some information to your guests, may them ask.

    Basic things like:

    • What is the difference between UVA and UVB?
    • What are the ingredients to avoid on sunscreen?
    • How do I know how often I need to re-apply my sunscreen?

    And this sort of questions.
